Our concept

We are a team of engineers whose objective is to develop the market for electric and hybrid aircraft.
In order to establish a knowledge base and a reputation for quality, we will start by building and flying an electric race plane for the “Air Race E“* circuit, sponsored by Airbus.
In the long term, we want to expand these Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) systems tailored in business aviation.

Construction

Our first project is the design and construction of an electric race plane to participate in the “Air Race E” events sponsored by Airbus in 2021. We are finalising our preliminary design stage and we will begin construction in July 2020.

The most striking feature of our first aircraft, the UR-1, is the V-tail design. This reduces “Interference Drag”, a parasite drag phenomenon caused when two aerodynamic surfaces intersect such as in an aircraft tail. By reducing the number of tail surfaces, we reduce the number of intersections and thus drag.

Technology

Thanks to new technologies, high-power, low-mass electric motors are enabling the development of electric vehicles in racing and aerobatic aviation. They have always had a very advantageous power-to-weight and power-to-price ratio compared to their combustion-powered counterparts. The key advantages of an electric drive train are the ease of maintenance, flat power curve, and low weight of the motor; the primary limiting factor is the low energy density of current battery technology.

In a long terme we expect to develop the DEP system (Distributed electric propulsion): by using the air entrained by the propellers, it is possible to increase the maximum lift coefficient of a wing by almost four times. This makes it possible to reduce the size of the wing to significantly improve cruising performance without compromising take-off and landing performance, or to provide other technical improvements. A transatlantic flight, such as from Geneva to New York, could land on small airfields much closer to the final destination. An electric propulsion system distributed by approximately 100 electric motors, powered by a gas turbine generator, promises these possibilities in complete safety thanks to the DEP system.

Certification & Safety

We work closely with the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA). We will be accredited by the FOCA for the title “Special Category Amateur Aircraft” and we are working with EAS for its certification.

On the basis of the applicable national and international standards, FOCA defines the framework conditions for safe and sustainable civil aviation in Switzerland under the motto “Safety first”.

Budget & Sponsorship

Thanks to our sponsors, we are involved in the “Air Race E” races. Our electric aircraft is of the experimental category, which is much less expensive and complicated to certify. This allows us to realize our project with a limited budget.

Pie Aeronefs SA also aims to promote sustainable aviation by developing an electric racing aircraft. This aircraft, the UR-1 will participate in the new Air Race E race series in 2021, a series of televised electric air races around the world. The competition offers companies a great opportunity to showcase the technology and brand values. We are in the process of manufacturing the UR-1, so this is the right time for sponsorship. Marc Umbricht

CEO | Pilot | Engineer

A true aviation enthusiast, Marc passed his commercial pilot’s license in 2017 in Zurich. He was then employed as a pilot on Saab 2000 by Darwin Airlines until its dissolution. Mr. Umbricht took this opportunity to start his studies in aeronautical engineering in the USA. Perceiving the maturation of certain electrical technologies that provide significant advantages over aeronautics, he decided it was the perfect time to pursue his dream and found Piearonefs SA. He is not only the leader of the engineering team but he will pilot the UR1 for next year’s race.

Radim Laga

Electric Engineer

Our electrical system is custom designed by LZ-Tec s.r.o., a partner that cooperates with companies in the aviation industry. Radim and his team are responsible for the main battery pack which is composed of lithium-polymer cells that provide the energy necessary for the operation of our Emrax 348 motor. The team also designed an electrical regulator (inverter) called Hyperion which is used to regulate power for the Emrax motor according to pilot needs.

Sandra Lourenço

Structural engineer

Junior Engineer in Materials Science, Sandra obtained her Master in Materials Science and Engineering at Grenoble INPPhelma, she has worked in several sectors such as nuclear energy, construction and electronic industry. At Pie Aeronefs she works with the technical team to design parts, devices or mechanical transmission systems, to manage the analysis of the prototype, and the development through different adjustments, tests and simulations.

Marc Lauper

Aircraft Manufacturing Technician

Initial training as a polymechanic, Marc subsequently studied industrial design. He has worked in various fields such as robotics (industrial android), space (autonomous housing), automation (electronics & food), plastic injection and stamping (electronics). At Pie Aeronefs he is in charge of the development for the production and implementation of the prototype.
